Their other name - Dolphin fish, is apparently because they communicate with similar sounds to dolphins.

Stone fish is pretty obvious!
As is fingermark!

Many of the other names tend to be local names, and differ widely.

Snapper comes from an old old story.......two guys hooked the same fish and were argueing about who got to keep it so they decided to snap her in two.

You like that one?????? : jumping laugh: Me either really....look at the time, give me a break!!

“shark” comes from the Greek Karckarios and the Latin carcharus, which mean “sharp teeth”!

The trout loves to go after bait. And “trout” comes from the Latin trocta, which means “the greedy fish”.

can anyone come up with a few more??

Mulloway is an aboriginal word meaning the "greatest fish"
Mulloway were also known as "butterfish" due to the buttery slick
that appears on the surface of the water behind the surfbreak when they are spawning.
The word Jewfish came from "jewelfish" as theire is a certain perl like bone in larger
jewies. Before the age of cameras the Jewfish fishermen would keep a tin with the jewels
of the Mulloway they had caught inside it for bragging rights.
