PROPOSED MARINE PARK
CLOSURES
PROPOSED MARINE PARK CLOSURES
Monday 8th August
Businesses Australia wide need to be aware of what is happening to our coastline with regard
to marine park closures. If you are unaware, as are many other people, of the processes
that HAVE ALREADY been put into place by the Labor government in a deal struck with
the Greens Party, then you need to read this press release as it will hopefully inform you of
the urgency of the situation. Please look at the map enclosed with this information package
and you will see that closures suggested cover excessively large parts of the Australian
coastline. If these marine park closures come into affect, businesses and families not only
stand to lose a substantial portion of our fishing and recreational coastlines, but also the
revenue that these areas generate.
The Labor government have sprung these closures on us just prior to the election, giving
businesses very little time to gain a full understanding of the far reaching ramifications
that this proposal will have on industry across Australia. They have chosen these areas
on a quota basis with no scientific evidence to support their decision. The closures are
simply a deal made with The Greens to secure preferential votes in the upcoming election to
assist the Labor party in winning the election. The Global financial crisis although deemed
to be over, is still significantly affecting industry across Australia, yet Labor and The Greens
still deem it a viable proposal to discriminate against Australians through taking away
their livelihoods by simply removing their places of work. These proposed closures are no
different to the government saying that you will no longer be allowed to build houses in
Coffs Harbour, sell fuel in Newcastle or build boats in your factory. What they are proposing
with these marine parks by closing large areas of ocean is exactly that. Businesses in any
way related to the fishing and boating industry will suffer! As will other businesses that rely
on these industries for their livelihoods.
Don’t assume that it is just the fishing and boating industry! If you have a careful look at
the map you will notice that many of these proposed areas can easily be linked to already
established national parks, something that will surely happen if Labor returns to power. We
will then lose the beaches and surrounding waterways as well. The effect will then be even
more far reaching.
We understand that marine parks are a necessity. If we intend to protect our Australian
coastlines and provide for our future generations, we need to establish sustainable policies
using scientific evidence gained by appropriate environmental studies and consultation
involving the correct people, NOT by randomly drawing lines out into the ocean with a
complete disregard for the businesses and people that it will affect.
In Mackay on Tuesday (July 27) Opposition Leader Tony Abbott announced the Coalition’s
policy. He announced there would be an immediate halt to Labor’s marine park roll-out so
that processes could be restructured to ensure a better say for all anglers and recreational
enthusiasts in park design and management.
He also announced that the Coalition’s Fisheries Minister would be a full partner in the
process with the Minister for Environment, and all decisions would have to be jointly agreed.
The full Coalition policy is available at http://www.liberal.org.au.
This issue should not be a political debate but unfortunately this has been used as a platform for
Labor to secure votes to remain in power. We don’t have a lot of time left before the upcoming
Election Day so the time to act is now.
Please forward this information to as many people as possible to ensure they are aware
of the proposed changes and can make an informed choice on 21st August, 2010.

Re: Federal Marine Parks
All is not well for industry as we head towards a Critical Federal Election!
We have been advised that Labour Are Preferencing the Greens and we have the Greens wanting and announcing that they want 30%? Of Australia’s waters closed to extractive uses i.e. Recreational Fishing.
This political football again will be at Industry expense and if you take time to think about it, disastrous for rec fishing let alone your business.
To fight this AFTA has acted where it can to get the message out there including a Television campaign focused on Marginal seats.
The TVC can be viewed on U Tube. Go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpxZv9aab1Q
Further, it really is also up to you to fight and we have various attachments you need to read and use in your business to get the message through to your customers and regional communities.
We feel there is no choice in this matter, we have support from the BIA’s, Outboard groups and industry to finally move forward to try and make a difference!
Please also help your cause and if you can assist by distributing the information “Don’t Vote Green! And Keep Australia Fishing, then you know that you have given it your best.
The attachments are, Understanding the voting system, Marine Parks Cartoon and flyer/ poster. Use them as you choose.

Re: Federal Marine Parks
This is from another website, not the views of that website but from one of the members.
Just a bit of info to balance the debate and to always check the facts and real source of information.
MEDIA RELEASE The Hon Peter Garrett MP
Minister for Environment Protection, Heritage and the Arts
PG/83 15 July 2010
COALITION NEEDS TO REEL IN THE FACTS ON MARINE PLANNING
Federal Environment Protection Minister Peter Garrett today responded to the widespread campaign of misinformation from the Liberal and National parties on the Government’s marine bioregional planning process.
The facts are these:
• FACT ONE: The areas being assessed are part of a comprehensive program of work taking place in Commonwealth waters - which start around 5.5kms from the shore - right around the country, to assess the unique economic and environmental values of the Australian east coast marine environment. It was a process initiated by the Howard Government.
• FACT TWO: In designing marine reserves the Government is aiming to strike a balance between multiple use and highly protected areas. We want to work with stakeholders to secure a good conservation outcome while minimising social and economic impacts.
• FACT THREE: Consultation on ‘Areas for Further Assessment’ in the East Marine Region is now underway. These areas for further assessment are simply areas where more detailed information will be collected. Importantly, they are not proposed no-take zones - no proposed 'no-take' zones have been identified anywhere.
• FACT FOUR: The priority for the Government is to avoid or minimise impacts on existing users. However the Government is prudently also developing a displaced efforts policy that will guide the approach to any operations impacted after exhaustive consultations are concluded. A consultant's report has been received from MAXimus Solutions which contributes to this discussion, but it does not represent Government policy.
• FACT FIVE: A Stakeholder Advisory Group has been established to provide input from sectors that have an interest in the development of the policy, and staff from my department are travelling up and down the east coast now to meet with key groups and individuals.
• FACT SIX: The process has been extended to allow further and more thorough consultation, with industry, fishers and other users.
• FACT SEVEN: The release of each draft plan will be followed by a 90-day public consultation period where everybody – commercial, charter and recreational fishers, the tourism industry, the marine industries and other sectors, environment groups and the public – will have the chance to influence the final outcome.
Instead of running ill-informed scare campaigns the Liberal and National parties should deal in the facts.
