For immediate release: The Torn Blue Fringe of barren facts
The National Parks Association (NPA) Marine have released a report called “The Torn Blue Fringe: Building Resilience”. Three of the key findings of this report is that climate change will impact greatest on NSW managed marine waters than any other Australian marine jurisdiction; that fishing and its related impacts are the key issue that needs to be urgently addresses; and that a large marine park is required to be established in the Hawkesbury Shelf Bioregion with a smaller marine park in the Twofold Shelf Bioregion in the south of the State.
This report follows others from the NPA/NCC umbrella, the most notable being the 2006 report “Empty Oceans, Empty Nets” which alleged a decline in Australian fish stocks from 1940-2000 and was held up as proof for marine parks and "no fishing zones”. This report was subsequently reviewed and debunked by fisheries research scientists at the University of British Columbia.
The gist of the report is that sea-bed mapping has determined that urchin barrens comprise as much as 50% of the area of near-shore reefs in NSW, and that these urchin barrens have been linked to the removal of large predatory fish, leaving urchin populations to grow unchecked resulting in urchin barrens. They then state the ecological imbalance resulting in urchin barrens can be checked and even recovered by marine parks.
The main natural predator of the species of sea urchins in NSW is widely recognized by marine scientists as being abalone. It is also recognized by marine scientists that a relationship exists between abalone and sea urchins such that a reduction in the numbers of abalone along the NSW coast has resulted in the creation of areas of urchin barrens. Since the early 1990’s a large proportion of abalone has died along a 500km stretch of the NSW coastline, and it is thought the mortality is due to a combination of reasons including the Perkinsus parasite, illegal abalone harvesting, and environmental factors. It is also why DPI Fisheries were so concerned about the Perkinsus virus, abalone numbers and ecological impacts such as urchin barrens they held a workshop in September 2003 to discuss these issues.
AAG President Phil Ingram said “This relationship between abalone and urchins is not recognized by the NPA as it does not suit their anti-fishing agenda. As emphasized by Professor Kearney, marine parks in NSW do nothing to protect biodiversity from ecological processes that result from land management practices with pollution run-off and even Sydney’s off-shore sewage outfalls, diseases such as Perkinsus, and even illegal harvesting. The Torn Blue Fringe report, like the debunked Empty Oceans report, is just an exercise in spin with half truths and distortions as justification for marine parks and the banning of fishing.”

For Immediate Release: The Marine Park Amendment Bill and censorship
Currently being debated in Parliament is the Marine Park Amendment Bill, which was introduced by Verity Firth on 7th December 2007. Two issues have been brought up, the veracity of the scientific data used in the justification of the zoning plans for the States six marine parks, and the consultation process used in the marine parks process.
The Opposition contends that Section 17E of this amendment bill will allow the Minister to allow or make a regulation or zoning plan at any time after consulting with the Marine Parks Authority and without public consultation. And meaningful consultation and veracity of scientific data is at the crux of the entire marine parks issue.
Central to the Oppositions arguments has been Professor Robert Kearney’s presentation delivered to the Australian Society for Fish Biology, and a subsequent letter to the Premier, Morris Iemma by Robert Kearney regarding a series of exchanges between the Minister, Kearney and members of the public.
Government speakers gave platitudes to marine parks by remaining on-message and not addressing Prof. Kearney’s criticisms except with dismissive or disparaging remarks. Verity Firth stated “Robert Kearney is literally a lone voice in the scientific community opposing marine parks.” And Robert Coombs "I just love how the Opposition always drag out these roosters. Now it is Professor Kearney. This reminds me of the efforts of the tobacco industry to search out scientific support for its product." And Barry Collier’s remarks that he has “enough rubbish on his desk” when offered a copy of Kearney’s paper.
AAG President Phil Ingram said: “An increasing number of renowned scientists are speaking out against poorly designed marine parks, or marine parks with questionable objectives. These include Shipp, Buxton, Shipton, Tilzey, Starck, Diggles, Hillborn and Pepperell. The disparaging comments made by Government ministers of Robert Kearney are typical of a Government not interested in the veracity of scientific data nor in a meaningful public consultation process. The Government is staying on-message regarding the implementation and processes of their marine parks. One has to wonder if these ministers have even bothered to read Robert Kearney’s paper. Prof Kearney, as have others who criticize the State’s marine parks, have often stated in the media that they is not opposed to well designed and well implemented marine parks – its just that the ones in NSW are neither.”
Phil concludes: “This whole process appears to be one of censorship. When conclusive arguments are raised against inept ministers, their response seems to be to take away the option for the dissenters to be heard.”

squidgie
It's another unfortunate fact that a high percentage of Aussies that do fish, either don't care or can't be bothered speaking out against the ridiculous antics of governments that hold power based on Greens preferences etc.
In Qld we are having the same problems with the government currently in the process of closing down or locking fishermen out of parts of Moreton Bay.
It stinks ! ![]()
