Marine Park Protest Stickers!!!!

Postby marineparkstickers » Wed May 27, 2009 7:27 pm

G'day guys, great to be a part of the forum!

A little background to myself and why I designed these stickers and had them printed. :

My name is Tim Wilson, everyone just calls me wilso :D

I am a spearfisherman first and fisherman second. I love both sports and spend most of my spare time doing one or the other. I am not here to start a spearo's vs lineo's argument nor do I feel there is one. We have bigger issues in our sports future than each other, on this I think we can all agree. A united front is the best approach we have got.

The stickers came about after the initial proposition of the massive marine park drafted to basically run from Wollongong to Sydney. After reading the opinions of the general public it became blatantly clear to me that most of the public had no idea about the science behind marine parks (or significant lack there of) and many of the other controversies we are well aware of that perhaps the greater community is not.

I will spare you the lecture as I am sure the majority of us are aware of the massive shortcomings with many current marine park plans and zones.

I have a great interest in the science of marine parks as a Bachelor of Science holder with major in Biology and having studied marine biology and fisheries management I have seen what is required in order for marine parks to be a) necessary and b) actually work and would be hard pressed to find a working example in Australian waters

But onto the stickers hey! What a read already, if you got this far congratulations!!!!

Yep there's a lot of text there. And it's not as blunt as we might like. But in designing the sticker it was important to myself and the people I discussed it with that we remain "intellectual". we've science on our side, and with a united front we have a passionate cry, we don't need to stoop to name calling and finger pointing, we need to encourage the public to see the facts for themselves. The science is all good for us and all negative for the NPA, and if we can get people to think about this, that has to be a good thing!

The sticker design was voted for on spearfishing forum www.spearoz.org All members were given the opportunity to submit quotes, ideas and even designs and the most popular were put to a poll. This one was the clear favourite, once I had a final design, I went to the Underwater Skindivers & Fisherman's Association Inc. (USFA - spearfishing australia's governing body) and asked for their approval of the design and message. They were supportive of the sticker so it went to print.

I funded all the printing from my own back pocket and am selling them back at no real net profit (around 3c per sticker profit, but I have given away over 100 stickers to marine parks protests and spearfishing clubs to distribute)

The original stickers have all sold and there were issues with the quality of the materials used in the first batch so a new batch is going to print. This lot will be printed on the highest quality vinyl product with UV ink and is guarenteed to survive 3 years on a car or similar, rain hail or shine!

The stickers are as follows

This is an example of the product, the stickers haven't gone to print yet.I am looking for members of fishing clubs, spearfishing clubs, shop owners and other interested distributers to commit to ordering a certain amount.

The new batch of stickers will cost approx. $1.80-$2 per sticker. Out of this I will make no profit, I am not in this to make money I am in this to do something for the sport.

[/b]If you would like to commit to buying 20 stickers or more (I don't need any form of payment, just your word is fine) let me know.[/b] Either post here or pm me

Once I have confirmed approx 300-350 sticker sales they will go to print and will be available for purchase individually or in smaller quantities

Hopefully the stickers will go to print in the next few weeks and we can get them out there!

Mate, I love the idea behind the stickers and you should be commended on your initiative for getting the stickers printed and getting them out there.
The one thing that struck me at first look (that's usually all anyone ever gives a bumper sticker) is the wording looks like it's an attack on a political party. I'm ok on this because they are behind the push for marine parks but it's the "Greenies" that are pushing this barrow as well and they come from all political parties.

Please don't take offense to what I'm trying to say It's just an observation at first glance.
Well done on what your doing, I hope this gives you some ideas for future stickers.
Cheers,
Rosco

Mate, I'm from Qld, whilst we have not had the same size problems as NSW with these parks, we have the same issue! Its spreading, obviously the pollies think it is a vote winner. I'll take 50, and I'll hand em out at out at our fishing club meetings (I'm in 4, so that's a few bumper bars!). Will have to get you to post em to me though!

Let me know if you want money up front.

cheers

Andrew.
