A 70cm minimum length and 2 fish limit sounds reasonable
but the loophole that allows the pros to take up to 10 x 45cm
fish per shot wont help the populations recovery. :fish:

Yeah nip, rec limits are reasonable but this,

The new minimum legal length will apply to recreational and commercial fishing. To minimise wastage of incidental catch, commercial Estuary General fishers using meshing nets will have a by-catch allowance (possession limit) of 10 fish between 45 and 70 cm.

Is an absolute effing joke, when are the powers that be( I think they call themselves a government) going to wake up to themselves. "":( >>:

New rules are great, but it should apply across the board rec and commercial fishers ??

Commercial fishers should be allowed a higher bag limit for fish over 70cm than rec fishos , unsure as to what there bag limit is or even if they have one??

But in my opinion they should not be trawling the rivers in the first place, "":( go to any co op and see how many undersize flathead are in the bins ?? >>: >>:

thats my little rant for the week. ::" ::"

Happy fishing. :fishing: :fishing:

Cheers. :glug: :glug: :glug:

Anyone dare to guess how long it takes for a recovery? I head jewies are fast growers and spawn earlier than a lot of other fish, is that correct?

Not sure if I'm just getting more knowledgeable about their patterns or the numbers are simply improving but I've found them increasingly easy to catch over the years. Problem is when big schools of the soapies end up in easy to access spots like behind the footy club at Mullum they get flogged by dozens of guys fishing worms who take everything they catch with no regard for size or bag limits. Still I think for whatever reason their numbers and even the average size are improving dramatically, I've heard stories of divers seeing a football field sized school of mature fish on one of the protected reefs. Previous winters in the Brunswick River which everyone knows is shallow and not ideal jew water (disregarding the break wall) the average sized fish I caught was around 50cm with a good fish in the mid to high 60s. This past winter the average fish was in the 60s with fish into the 80s common and my mate even got one over a metre in the actual river which is very uncommon.
