New Bass season rules from the DPI

Postby Prof » Tue Mar 26, 2013 8:25 pm

Australian Bass (Macquaria novemaculeata) and Estuary Perch (Macquaria colonorum)
Any method other than by catch and release fishing (so that any fish caught are immediately returned to the water unharmed) for Australian Bass and Estuary Perch is prohibited in all waters except the backed up waters of any freshwater impoundments and their tributaries, upstream from where they enter the backed up waters of any freshwater impoundments during the period from June to August (inclusive) each year.
Here is a PDF of the rules

Yes m8 it does, actually you have always been able to target them in closed season if you are going to C & R,they haven't changed the rules just clarified them, the basic rule is still "NO TAKE" in closed season.

Too the people who accused me of interpreting the rules to suit my point of view ; har har: ; har har: ; har har: ; har har: ; har har: ; har har: ; har har: ; har har: as it turns out I was interpreting the rules the way they were meant to be ^^:) ^^:) ^^:) ^^:) ^^:) ^^:) ^^:)

I will post this again,

This needs to be re-read...

So the way I read it is that any waterway above a dam or impoundment can be fished during the closed season but only catch and release angling is allowed, all other waterways are prohibited during the closed season.

Cheers.

Actually m8 dont mean to sound one eyed and argumentative  but I read it as the same as your first post, "Any method other than by catch and release fishing for Australian Bass and Estuary Perch is prohibited in all waters except the backed up waters"

My take -

During the closed season if you happen to catch a bass it must be released straight away unharmed
back into the water unless you are fishing in stocked dams/impoundments.

I personally release all my bass whether I'm targeting them during the summer months
or happen to catch one during the closed season. :fish:

This from the DPI, maybe they had a rethink of the original wording??

The thing is they dont mention target for catch and release. Most people sport fish for bass and release them. "Taken" just means if you catch them dont take them to eat?

But you can take them above impoundments? is there such a thing? If there is bass above impoundments wouldnt this inhibit movement thus not letting them breed in the end not have established population meaning that there is no bass above impoundments making there statement illogical?

M8 I'm not commenting on the rules anymore,I dont care,I'll just do what I think is right,as for the fish above impoundments m8 they stock most dams etc these days thus stocking the waterways above them.

Just a couple of thoughts about whats happening here. 1. If you catch and release bass or EPs no matter what time of the year you are safe. Have fun! The majority of fishers that target bass on this forum practice catch and release, therefore no problem. 2. From my understanding bass and EPs need saltwater to stimulate breeding thus the migration of these fish to saline water during the off season (June to August). The same fish in and above impoundments cannot reach saline water to breed and are legal to catch and keep during the off season as they are restocked by us the licenced fishers of NSW. The current rules are in place to protect the fish that can migrate and breed naturally, ie the fish in the waterways below impoundments or waterways that are not obstructed by dams, walls, weirs or such. What do you think ?? Sorry just me having a bit of a rant. Dave. :fishing:

I think you ae correct Dave.

Certainly the people on this forum have sustainability in mind,
the recreational fishing community has come along way since the early days
where everything was filleted prior to release. :fishing:
