Unfortunately fish kills are a part of our river system now.

There was a time when the floodplains in our river catchments held
the excess floodwater back and slowly filtered it back into the estuary through
swamp and mangrove systems. Mother nature knew how to take care of herself.

Now when the floodwaters receed and the river levels drop below the height
of the cane drains the farmers open them up to get rid of the black water through
their floodplain drainage network. This runoff conatins sediment from acid sulphate
soil and chemical sprays. It pours back into the river at a rate of knots, too quickly
for fish to escape and it traps them.

With CSG drilling set to occur in and around our catchments I'm hoping the chemical
coktails that are introduced into our watertable from this industry somehow mutate
the fish to make them immune to the black water of death
