Re: Have your say on mulloway recovery
The Richmond was stocked with Jew by money from recreational angling fishing liscences a few years back.
I know that last year the pros came down from Tweed and netted over 4 tonne od school jew just from around Wardell.
The 15 pros who still operate on the Richmond also take what they can, when they can.
Nets don't know the difference between stocked Jew and wild jew.
I saw pictures this year of the number of big jewies that just one pro alone caught off the close inshore reefs off Ballina over winter.
One guy I have fished with has worked with the pro this year but stopped working with him after seeing the carnage that was happening,
Shep has probably seen some of those photos as well.
The by-catch of small jew from trawlers is also disgracefull even with their so-called by-catch minimizers.
I know of many recreational anglers that have fished all their lives and never even caught a big jew.
I'm not saying that any newly proposed laws are not good but until the pro situation is addressed
I can't see stocks recovering any time soon.
My ten cents worth.

Re: Have your say on mulloway recovery
It wouldn't really bother me too much if they did that but it would rule out keeping many jew from the Bruns. Out of maybe 300 I have caught over the years I think only one went over 70cm in the actual river.
Sad thing is when the big schools of 35-45cm fish go up river the meatos don't care about bag or size limits and flog hell out of them on worms anyway.

Yeah mate, i have heard the same.
Yep nip, i've seen the pics you are talking about.
I think that by wanting to do something to increase/protect mulloway stocks is great
but like already mentioned start with the pros as they cause the majority of damage.
And if heard sizes and limits goes ahead, maybe they should actually police the matter a bit more especially in areas where there are a lot of smaller fish that get heavily fished, eg- Wardell, i would imagine that even now they would catch a lot of people over bag limits and with undersized fish.
